Kungur turned
359 years old
On July 2, 2022 the city of Kungur celebrated its 359th anniversary. On this day the new tourist brand of the city was presented.
Kungur’s identity had been created for three months together with active residents of Kungur and Tourism Department of Kungur administrative district. This is the first territorial branding that designers developed together with citizens. Our approach helped to make the identity loved by the citizens even before it was developed.
Kungur welcomes guests with the unique and most beautiful city stele in the Urals. So why do we need to invent and breed new entities when the city already has well-established and recognizable images? It is enough to take the existing one, comprehend, update and adapt it for today's tasks.
We’ve developed the individual accent typeface specifically for the city of Kungur and named it after Iren River that is flowing through the city. This is the modern experimental antique with contrasting strokes and pronounced character of Old Slavonic style. For body text we have chosen Leksa Sans, which was kindly provided to the city by Paratype.
We’ve created the set of icons in which we’ve used recognizable images of Perm Krai and Kungursky District. Here is the bridge over Iren River, the horn of plenty from the city’s coat of arms, a balloon, a samovar, as well as a familiar Perm Animal Style images.
The historic buildings’ brickwork graphic ornaments of Kungur became the basis for additional style-forming elements. They refer us to the facades of the merchant building of the city and to the ornaments of arts and crafts.
Kungur is famous throughout the country for its craftsmen. We were inspired by the Kungur pottery craft and borrowed local ornamentalism to create a set of original stars, which will further enhance the city’s identity.
Did you know that Kungur has a “Navel of the Earth”? The circular composition of the “Navel” has become a graphic technique for our subject headings, which can easily be generated for any city events.
Kungur historic architecture has a plenty of arched vaults. We’ve used this form as frames for image-building photos.
